Hangzhou, famously described by Marco Polo as "the finest and noblest city in the world," is just an hour away from Shanghai by high-speed train. Known for its UNESCO-listed West Lake, ancient Buddhist temples, and world-famous Longjing tea, this one-day itinerary packs the city’s essence — lake views, Zen tranquility, and tea culture — into a single, unforgettable day
Itinerary
00 — Depart from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. High-speed trains run frequently, and the journey takes about 45 minutes to one hour. (Book tickets to Hangzhou East Station — it's the main hub.)
00–08:45 — Arrive at Hangzhou East Station. Take a taxi or metro (Line 1 to Longxiangqiao Station) to West Lake.
00–11:30 — West Lake (脿ę¹) — UNESCO World Heritage site. Start at Broken Bridge (ęꔄ), the legendary meeting place of the White Snake love story. Stroll along Bai Causeway and Su Causeway (čå ¤), a 2.8km scenic path lined with willows and six stone bridges. Take a boat cruise to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (äøę½å°ę) — the iconic image on the back of China's 1 RMB note. Optional: visit Flower Harbor (č±ęøÆč§é±¼) to feed the koi fish.
30–12:30 — Lunch near West Lake. Try Hangzhou classics like Dongpo pork (äøå”č), West Lake vinegar fish (脿ę¹éé±¼), or Longjing shrimp (é¾äŗč¾ä»).
00–14:30 — Leifeng Pagoda (é·å³°å”) — climb (elevator available!) to the top for panoramic views of West Lake and the surrounding hills. This pagoda is famous for the legend of the White Snake, who was imprisoned here.
00–16:30 — Lingyin Temple (ēµé寺) & Feilai Peak (é£ę„å³°). Lingyin is one of China's most renowned Buddhist temples, with over 1,700 years of history. At Feilai Peak, explore hundreds of ancient Buddhist stone carvings carved into the cliffs over a thousand years ago.
45–17:45 — Longjing Tea Village (é¾äŗę) — walk through terraced tea plantations nestled in green hills, learn about tea picking from local farmers, and sip freshly brewed Longjing — China’s most famous green tea — in a traditional teahouse.
30 — Return to Hangzhou East Station for the high-speed train back to Shanghai. Trains run until late evening.
