Meet David: the Chongqing guide who spent 20+ years in Madrid
Almost every week we get an email from Spain or Latin America that goes something like this: prices look fine, the itinerary looks fine, and then comes the real question, usually in a second message, slightly embarrassed: "the guide actually speaks Spanish, right?"
It is a fair question. A traveler who was putting together a Chongqing trip for a Colombian family of ten wrote on TripAdvisor that of all the agencies she evaluated, many "answered with AI and translators, they did not really speak Spanish." We have read that review more than once, and we get why she wrote it. "Spanish-speaking guide" is one of the most abused phrases in this business.
So instead of insisting yes-really-trust-us, we would rather show you. Meet David.
More than twenty years in Madrid, then back to Chongqing
David is our lead guide in Chongqing. He speaks the kind of Spanish you only get by living somewhere: he spent more than two decades in Madrid before moving back to China, and he has been guiding Spanish- and English-speaking travelers around Chongqing ever since.
What does that look like in practice? A few things our guests mention over and over:
- He answers questions directly in Spanish, not in translated-from-English Spanish. At Huguang Guild Hall, when someone asks about the immigrant families who built it, the answer comes with the tangents and the jokes intact.
- He knows what Spanish and Latin American travelers actually worry about. Can the hotpot be not-spicy? Where do you find bread that doesn't taste sweet? Why is there no jamón anywhere? He has heard it all, usually before you ask.
- He explains Chongqing's economy, migration history and daily life the way a Spanish friend would over a caña, not the way a phrasebook would.
In their words
We could describe David all day, but our guests do it better:
"Our guide David speaks fluent Spanish, having lived in Madrid for over 20 years."
— TripAdvisor review, August 2026, three-day Chongqing tour
"Our Spanish guide David is outstanding: fluent Spanish from 20+ years living in Madrid, patient, knowledgeable, and gave in-depth explanations of Chongqing's culture, economy and society. 100% worth booking."
— TripAdvisor review, July 2026, Ciqikou & Chongqing 1949 Theater day tour
"David was excellent, very kind, punctual, and had great knowledge about the karst heritage of the area. He organized the itinerary perfectly, without rushing and without mandatory shopping. 10/10 experience!"
— TripAdvisor review, September 2026, Wulong day trip, written in Spanish
"Congratulations to David, the guide, and his companion, photographer Haisho, for their excellent work. Their professionalism, knowledge, and friendly manner made all the difference."
— GetYourGuide verified review, March 2026, Chongqing city walking tour

Tours where you can request David
David guides most of our Chongqing lineup, including:
- Chongqing city walking tour, full day, Spanish or English
- Wulong Three Natural Bridges and Fairy Mountain day trip
- The three-day "Chongqing in a Nutshell": city, Wulong and traditional culture
- Ciqikou Ancient Town and the Chongqing 1949 show
- The evening walking tour with the Two Rivers night cruise
One honest note: David is one person, and his calendar fills up, especially around Golden Week and Easter. If having a specific guide matters to you, tell us when you book and we will confirm availability before you pay. And if his dates don't line up with yours, don't worry: every guide we send out is interviewed in person, in Spanish, by someone on our team who would notice a translator.
Five questions that expose a fake "Spanish-speaking guide"
Whether you book with us or with someone else, these five questions work. We use versions of them when we hire.
- Where did you live, and for how long? A real answer comes with street names and complaints about the rent.
- Can you send me a voice note in Spanish, unscripted, right now? Ten seconds is enough. Accents matter less than rhythm.
- Ask something weirdly specific: "¿puedo pagar con Revolut en los restaurantes?" A translation app stalls; a person answers from experience.
- Will the guide I am chatting with be the guide on the day? Get it in writing.
- Can you show me two recent reviews in Spanish, with dates and names?
Frequently asked
Does David guide every tour? No, and we would rather tell you straight: he is in high demand. Request him when booking and we confirm his availability. We also have other Spanish-speaking guides on the team.
Does a tour in Spanish cost more? Yes, a bit: tours with a Spanish-speaking guide run about 15% more than the same tour in English. Good Spanish-speaking guides are scarce, and the David-level kind are scarcer still, and that difference is in the price you see at checkout — not in surprises at the hotel door.
Does David guide outside Chongqing? His tours are mostly Chongqing and Wulong. For Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai or Chengdu we work with local Spanish-speaking guides we have vetted ourselves. Ask us and we will tell you honestly who is available where.
Still deciding? Read our visa-free guide in Spanish first, then browse all our tours in English and Spanish. If you want David on your dates, write "David" in the booking notes or tell us on WhatsApp and we will check his calendar.
